O suboficial Saman Gunan estava levando tanques de ar para o grupo preso, mas perdeu a consciência ao voltar. Seu parceiro de mergulho tentou revivê-lo, mas não conseguiu e teve que trazer seu corpo para fora.

O grupo entrou na caverna enquanto estava seca, mas uma forte chuva repentina inundou o local e eles ficaram presos. Eles foram descobertos após 10 dias a 2,5 milhas da boca da caverna.
